trek description

Marrakech is the perfect place to stay for a few days, but at some point you are going to be looking for something to do outside the city. We offer many one day treks that can be done using the medina as a base. This hike takes you to the market town of Asni and beyond near Richard Bransons famous Kasbah Tamadot and trek up through juniper and pine woodlands. The walk takes you across strange plateaus where transhumance is in evidence. Down then to the small adobe village of Tinzert where we take a break for lunch. In the afternoon we pass through the salt mines on our way to Marigha where the trek ends.

Itinerary

Transfer at 8 am by comfortable air conditioned minibus or 4x4 or local taxi to the market town of Asni, passing through verdant valleys, Berber Villages and lush landscapes full of fruit trees, surrounded by the breath-taking panoramic views of the peaks of the High Atlas Mountains. Once in Asni, we will take the road up the side of the  river to the Kasbah Tamadot Hotel and nearby take the trail up into juniper and cork oak woodlands.Make sure you have at least 2 litres of water with you.

Kasbah Tamadot which is owned by tycoon Richard Branson and is the start point for this hike up through juniper and pine woodlands to reach the adobe village of Tinzert for lunch. We pass through transhumance plateaus which have unusual rock and earth structures. The heady aromas of wild thyme fill the air and we can pick some to make tea. After lunch, we descend the valley to the salt mines where you can see how the salt water is pulled up from 20 metres underground and left to evaporate in the sun and left in pans to form the salt crystals. From there we continue to reach the olive region of Marigha and your transport back to Marrakech. The trek takes around 6-7 hours of walking.

This trek can be done using Marrakech as a base or, you can spend a night in a guesthouse in one of the nearby villages. At the end of the trek, you can return to Marrakech or choose from other locations to spend a night nearby. Just ask and we will offer suggestions.
