trek description

The M'Goun valley is located in the Central High Atlas Mountains. From an administrative point of view belongs to the province of Ouarzazate. This five day trek requires a day to get to the start point and on the last day at the end of the trek we return to Marrakech, or you can continue on for another tour or trek in a different location.

The M'goun summit is a popular destination for hikers and trekking even if it has to play second fiddle to Mount Toubkal. Incidents during a M’Goun ascent are rare in view of the relatively low altitude of this mountain and the lack of glaciers.

For lovers of the great outdoors; the incredible scenery this trek offers makes it an unforgettable experience including the drive there and back from Marrakech. Throughout the journey, the high altitude, plateaus, canyons, valleys and rivers provide spectacular dimensions to your trip. Wild camping will add that sense of adventure to the mix.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech - Agouti

In the morning we drive from Marrakech to Agouti. There is time to relax at the guesthouse in Agouti when we arrive in the late afternoon.

Day 2: Agouti - Arous

Our muleteam arrives and organises all the supplies and equipment on the mules. Leaving the verdant valley we trek up to Arous with a picnic lunch stop on the way. Camp overnight.

Day 3: Arous - Tarkedit Plateau - Camp

Trek to Tarkedit Plateau. We trek up in a wild landscape before crossing the Aghouri pass at 3,450m then descend to the wind-eroded and possibly snow-covered high plateau of Tarkedit (2,900m). There is a hut on the plateau where the team will prepare lunch. After lunch we climb up to the southern side of the plateau and establish a camp at 3,400m, directly below M'goun West (3,978m). 7 - 8 hours trekking.

Day 4: Ascent of Jbel M'goun (4,068m) - Oulilimt

Today we make our ascent to the summit of Jbel M’goun; also called Ighim Mgoun. The climb follows a long ridge, all at or above 4,000m, which typically takes between 4 and 5 hours to the summit depending on snow conditions. From the top, there are impressive views across the Draa Valley and towards the Sahara Desert to the south. We descend back to Azib Izabine where the team will have set up camp and a welcome tea will be prepared before dinner. 8-9 hours trekking.

Day 5: Oulilimt - Ain Aflafal - Tighermet n´Ait Ahmed

Trek Down the valley into Ain Aflafal and to Tighermet n´Ait Ahmed (5hours walking) Camp.

Day 6: Camp - Tizi n'Ait Imi - Ait Bougamez

Today is the last day of the trek, from the campsite you will climb to the pass of Tizi n'Ait Imi (2960m) then the long descent to Ait Bougamez valley and the drive back to Marrakech.
