We’ll spend the first night in the 1000-year-old medina and the next day discovering some of its secrets as well as some local art. In the afternoon we take a trip to the charming coastal medina of Essaouira with its eclectic art scene and spend the night. In the morning we will discover this atmospheric medina and after lunch, we depart for the distant valleys of the High Atlas Mountains where you will be spending the next few days in a mountain village guesthouse with workshops led by Katherine in the heart of the Amazigh countryside.
Here everything is local, connected and in tune with the cycles of life and the rhythm of nature. Food is freshly cooked daily with plenty of fruits and vegetables, meat and fish.
There will be visits to galleries, museums of African and Amazigh (Berber )artifacts, colourful gardens, walks in the local villages, lunch in a local Berber house, and so much more on what promises to be a visually and culturally stimulating Art Escape.
Katherine Soutar is an artist and illustrator best known for her interpretations of folktales for the History press book series.
She has a first class honours in mixed media with glass, a postgraduate diploma in art therapy from Goldsmiths college and has worked for 15 years as a part-time art instructor in a secondary school alongside her work as a freelance illustrator which now spans more than 20 years.
She works in a range of media including; watercolour, inks and mixed media and also runs workshops in collograph printmaking techniques.
Katherine has a strong interest in narrative both personal and communal and the connections we make with the places we experience and the stories we create and hear about them. Her work often blends the real and the magical in order to express this.
During this retreat, Katherine will encourage and support you as you discover what inspires you most about this beautiful setting. She will demonstrate ways to express yourself in various art media and provide individual tuition and guidance as needed. In your sketchbooks you will create a lasting record of your time here, your own visual story to reflect on and work from later. The first workshop will involve creating small mixed media sketchbooks of your own in response to your surroundings that you can also use as a basis for this. Please also bring an A4 sketchbook and any preferred materials with you; Katherine can provide a list of essentials if you are unsure of what to bring. All mixed media/printmaking supplies will be provided by Katherine for your use.
Morocco, North Africa; a unique melting pot on the edge of Europe. This is the perfect location for an art escape. It provides so much visual stimulus, culture, wildness and welcome.
We have chosen the ancient city of Marrakech as the beginning of your journey; you will spend the first night in the heart of this historic medina in a traditional riad. The next day we explore some of the sights, soak up the sounds, colours, aromas and magic before taking the journey to the Atlantic coastal medina of Essaouira where we overnight. The following afternoon we take a scenic journey to the distant hills.
The next five nights will be in the picturesque High Atlas Mountains. Imlil is the last village at the trailhead of North Africa's highest mountain; Toubkal. It has spectacular scenery all year round presenting a feast for the eyes.
Fresh seasonal food will be served up with a wonderful range of fruits, vegetable, meat and fish as well as homemade breads and other goodies.
The guesthouse has an elevated terrace to give exceptional views of the surrounding villages, valleys and peaks. Accommodation is in shared twin en-suite rooms. Single supplement rooms are available with early bookings by request.
There will be time during the week to explore the locality, hikes can be arranged, mule rides if you wish and lunch in a local family home. There will also be time to just relax, unwind, absorb your surroundings and to work alone. In the evenings, conversation, perhaps some local musicians, henna for the ladies can also be arranged and rest.
