Day Trip to Essaouira

This coastal medina is a must see. Its history talks of pirate ships and the birth of the fantastic Gnawa music. Its seafood and fish excellent and plentiful; you can visit the port and choose your fish and they will cook it right there!!  Experience the uniqueness of this region, of the hidden treasures, of the expansive beach with its windsurfing and of the welcome. Visit one of the Argan cooperatives where local families produce the aromatic and therapeutic oil from the Argan nuts. On the way you will likely see the goats climbing the trees to reach them.

This old city was also the major trading place for the purple dye used for Roman togas extracted from the sea urchins that grow off the island called Mogador, now it is an island sanctuary for rare birds. Ride camels or horses on the extensive sandy beach, surf the Atlantic waves and wander the small streets of the soak where you will see many treasures unique to this region.

The ancient medina is full of quaint little streets punctuated with its vibrant blue doors and white painted buildings in architectural styles from Portuguese, Spanish and Phoenicians among other invaders that have left their mark along this Atlantic seaboard. Famous for its annual music festival, Essaouira is a haven for artists and craftsmen. Unique to this region is the woodwork, delicate carved and crafted from the Thuya found locally, as well as the intricate inlaid work and parquetry.

You will be collected from the prearranged meeting point in the morning at 08.00 am, and returned in the evening around 17.00 pm. Hours depending on the time of year. If you wish, we can arrange for a Guide to meet you in Essaouira to show you around, but it is really more fun to explore and discover yourself.

Lunch can be in one of the beach side restaurants, or perhaps choose some fish down at the port and have it cooked there, or, if you like we can arrange a picnic on the beach if it isn´t windy. Once you are in Essaouira, you are free to fill the day as you wish; wandering the pretty streets, the port and the promenade, or just relaxing and soaking up the unique atmosphere that makes this particular medina so charming.

We also recommend spending more than one day here to maximise the available activities; perhaps take a camel or horse ride and spend the night in a nomad tent, or take some surfing, wind surfing, or kite surfing lessons. We can assist you with accommodation and activity  reservations.
